Commonly Prescribed Medications for Pink Eye

Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/10/2014 -- Trilostane is a drug used to treat dogs with Cushing’s Disease, a disease where too much cortisone is produced, due to a tumor in the pituitary that results in excess secretion of the hormone from the adrenal glands. This type of tumor occurs in dogs more often than cats and trilostane does not work as well in cats. It also treats horses that have Cushings. It works by suppressing some of the processes in the adrenal gland that form the steroids.

Alopecia X, hormone-based hair loss, in Pomeranians and miniature poodles is also treated with this drug. Trilostane replaced mitotane which killed certain areas of the adrenal gland to reduce cortisone production. Trilostane lowers the amount of cortisone and aldosterone, another hormone produced by the adrenal gland.

Animals who respond to the drug will no longer eat, drink and urinate as often as they did prior to treatment. Their activity levels should go up and the condition of their hair coat and skin should improve. The side effects of trilostane include elevated blood levels of potassium, nitrogen waste products, bilirubin and calcium. The drug should only block glucocorticoid production but by may also block production of mineralocorticoids which can lead to lower levels of sodium and potassium in the blood, dehydration and weakness. Because it usually increases potassium, drugs that help the body retain it should be avoided.
