Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/07/2014 -- With the growing trend towards healthier consumption, rice alfajores is set to post an outstanding performance in 2013 against traditional alfajores, as these products have fewer calories, and are perceived as healthier light alfajores. One of the growth factors is the constant innovation from brands such as Chocoarroz (Joralfa) and Cachafaz (Ensincro), which launch new flavours and packaging sizes each year.

Competitive Landscape

Domestic brands are set to continue to lead the chocolate confectionery category in 2013, driven by Arcor and its portfolio of brands. Rocklets leads the bagged selflines/softlines category with a 69% retail value share, while Cofler, Tofi and other Arcor brands are set to collectively represent a 58% retail value share of tablets in 2013. Bon o Bon, Cofler and other Arcor brands acquired almost 42% of the market of countlines in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Chocolate confectionery is a category made up of premium and low-price products although it is characterised by standard brands, so unless an economic crisis should occur, such as that of 2001-2002, growth rates should not deviate from those predicted.

Gum

Government measures applied to restrict imports, with the aim of preventing the flight of capital, have had an indirect effect on the category by impeding the entry of imported gum brands, such as Wrigley's and Beldent Infinit, into Argentina. Although Beldent is a local brand, Beldent Infinit and Beldent Sensations are produced in Mexico.

Competitive Landscape

Cadbury Stani Adams is set to lead gum with 55% of retail value sales in 2013, although it is expected to lose ground to Arcor, with 40%. Cadbury's leadership is based on the acquisition of Beldent during the 1990s and of Adams at a global level in 2002. These two acquisitions allowed Cadbury to assemble a wide and deep product and brand portfolio, which cemented the company's leadership.

Industry Prospects

The levels of inflation and capital flight at the end of the review period would indicate that import restrictions aimed at controlling exchange rates will continue in the short run, and so restrictions on imported products in the gum category may occur again.

Sugar Confectionery

One of the main threats to sugar confectionery consumption in Argentina is the impact of inflation, which is weakening children's purchase power for sweets as pocket money does not keep up with inflation.

Competitive Landscape

Arcor is set to lead sugar confectionery with a 65% retail value share in 2013, followed by Cadbury Stani Adams (Mondelez International, Inc.) with 16%, and Ferrero Argentina with 5%. Arcor leads due to its strong distribution chain, which allows it to reach every kiosk (confectionery specialist). The company leads in every category with the exception of liquorice and mints, which are led by Cadbury Stani Adams and Ferrero, respectively.

Industry Prospects

The main threat to forecast growth is on-going inflation. The inflation rate is expected to reach 23% in 2013 (based on private estimations) and 10% on average over the forecast period (based on official sources). This is leading to constant increases in wages, and the cost of supplies and rents. The process of inflation and cost increases reduces profits, which puts the existence of many small- and medium-sized operators at risk.Report Overview
