Photography is an art form that includes no small amount of science. Digital SLR cameras have made photography more universal than ever, and the ubiquity of images on the internet has given photography a new life both in commemorating events or promoting products. It takes more than simply owning a camera to call oneself a photographer however, and getting the right experience means having enough knowledge and inspiration to move in the right direction. Photography For Dummies is a website that helps people find just that, and move effectively from amateur to professional.

The rise in electricity tariffs as well as fuel prices had a knock-on effect on the consumers in South Africa. Consumers were cutting down on nonessential products when making purchasing decisions for any household items. Home audio and cinema sales remained low compared with other categories in 2012. A steady volume growth of 7% was another slower rate compared with 2011's performance, due to the growing competition with multifunction portable electronic products such as tablets and smartphones, as the result of increasing trends of mobile activities. However, with the rising middle-class household number, the sales of home audio and cinema were boosted steadily.

Consumer electronics posted an overall 8% volume growth across all the categories during 2012. Volume growth was mainly driven by low-value items in categories such as home audio and cinema whilst categories such as computers and peripherals also saw remarkable growth. Increased access to the internet by consumers did have a positive effect on the sales growth for products such as portable computers, including laptops and tablets.

Poland's consumer electronics market is expected to exhibit solid growth over the medium term, underpinned by a strong consumption story and demand growth in key device categories. There is, however, risk to the downside as a result of the deteriorating security situation in neighbouring Ukraine. However, our core scenario is for continued growth in consumer electronics spending, as we forecast a CAGR of 3.6% 2014-2018. We expect outperforming device categories will be smartphones, tablets and smart TV sets, driven by new technologies, consumers seeking choice and low prices offered by foreign and domestic chains. Meanwhile, we retain our bearish outlook for digital camera and notebook volumes in the short term, with these device categories under pressure from smartphone and tablet cannibalisation respectively.

A government policy to reduce Saudi Arabia's reliance on foreign workers is having a negative impact on the sales of mobile handsets in the kingdom, with local retailers reporting that their sales have nearly halved as a result. Saudi Arabia's high mobile penetration rate has been largely boosted by the presence of a large number of foreign workers, many of whom were not included in official population statistics. BMI sees the government's move having a negative impact on mobile device sales as well as total mobile subscriptions in the market, however, we expect average prices to rise as a result.

- We forecast that Singapore's consumer electronics spending will increase 6.9% in US dollar terms in 2014 to reach US$4.6bn, with the smartphone and tablet device markets continuing to be the most dynamic market segments. We expect market growth to accelerate from 2013 after a squeeze on growth from price erosion in the TV and notebook markets, as well as cannibalisation of digital camera and mp3 player volumes associated with the proliferation of multi-functional smartphone ownership. While growth is forecast to accelerate it will remain below emerging markets in APAC as Singapore has one of the highest smartphone and tablet penetration rates in the world, meaning it has passed through the period of strongest growth associated with rapidly rising penetration.

BMI projects that Indian consumer electronics spending will grow by about 16% in US dollar terms in 2014 to US$43.4bn, fuelled by rising incomes, growing affordability, and the fact that 45% of India's population is under 25. PC market growth is currently being driven by laptops and by tablets, albeit sales of the latter are growing from a very small base. Meanwhile, sales of smartphones - including Apple's iPhone - are finally taking off. Spending on consumer electronics devices is projected to grow at an overall CAGR of 14% through to the end of our five-year forecast to 2018, with the key segments including low-cost mobile handsets, colour TV sets, set-top boxes and notebook computers. Much of the growth during our forecast period will be driven by growing demand from India's underpenetrated rural areas. However, there are concerns a new import tax on handsets priced at above 2,000 rupees could constrain demand in this key product category.

The development of Croatia's consumer electronics market has been stymied by the challenging economic environment in the country, which has seen GDP contract in real terms between 2010-2013. Declining consumption, unemployment, currency depreciation and fiscal austerity have all squeezed demand for devices, countering the positive impact of some technology trends such as adoption of smartphones, tablets and smart-TVs. BMI believes big-ticket items such as TVs and PCs have been hardest hit by the economic challenges faced in Croatia, leaving the handset market as the outperforming subsegment.
