Indonesians use a lot of vegetable and seed oil to prepare dishes and it is considered an essential food in the country. As a result, the price movements of vegetable and seed oil receive a lot of attention from the government. Significant fuel price hikes in 2013 led many consumers to switch to cheaper brands of vegetable and seed oil. Several lower-income consumers even traded down to unbranded and unpackaged cooking oil.
