This report examines the market for fee-based retail banking products and services in the US, UK and Europe. Fee-based income is the revenue that banks earn from sources such as monthly account fees, and fees for late credit card payments or unauthorised overdrafts. Retail and commercial banking makes a significant contribution towards the overall income of some of the world's biggest banks in comparison with investment banking activity, and the contribution of the former looks set to continue in 2012. The other main source of income earned by retail banks is from interest payments on products like personal loans and credit cards. Both supply and demand for these types of products are in decline. The number of credit cards in circulation fell by nearly one million in 2011 y-o-y due to reduced demand for the product on the behalf of consumers, and reduced supply due to the tighter lending criteria. The decline in unsecured lending will reduce the amount of interest income earned, and this is likely to lead to a continued increase in lending interest rates, regardless of the level of the UK base rate.

According to our most recent round of in-country interviews, which were conducted in December 2011, rents in Hong Kong could see a subdued 2012 in all commercial sub-sectors with an overall decline in rents predicted in the short term. For offices in particular, there is a consensus that economic uncertainty is spreading from the eurozone to the Asia Pacific region, leading to caution among investors and an overall slower market. However, moves by the government to ramp up development and create a new Central Business District (CBD2) in East Kowloon may keep office rents from decreasing for any prolonged period.

Australian new vehicle sales for 2011 stood at a total of 1,008,437 units, down by 2.6% year on year (y-oy), according to data released by Australia's Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), a figure very much in line with BMI's own forecast of 1,004,885 sales for the year. Looking forward, the FCAI remains upbeat on the outlook for the Australian auto industry in 2012, with the proviso that there remains uncertainty over the impact of the introduction of carbon pricing in July on auto demand over H212. This is a view BMI shares.

Medicated skin care faces significant competition from the beauty and personal care industry as a number of products are regarded more as cosmetics than medicine, because of the problems they are designed to solve. Medicated skin care includes products that are bought by consumers as self-medication, rather than treatments for more severe dermatological problems such as eczema or allergies. Substitutes for products in this category are usually cosmetic products rather than medicines.
