Domestic Backlash Against LNG Exports are Unlikely to Deter US LNG Liquefaction Projects

LogoCommercial production of shale gas in the US has opened the doors for exports of natural gas from the country. The US, which planned to import Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as recently as five years ago, has acquired the capability to export LNG due to the shale gas boom. Consequently, several US companies have planned either new LNG export terminals or convert their existing LNG import terminals into export terminals. However, the prospect of LNG exports has ignited a fierce debate in the US. Domestic consumers, manufacturers and environmental groups – even some lawmakers – have voiced opposition to exports, fearing an increase in domestic natural gas prices, the loss of cheap natural gas-fueled manufacturing opportunities, an increase in environmental pollution, and a compromise in the country’s long-term energy security. However, this domestic backlash against exports is unlikely to deter the US LNG liquefaction projects, as the exports will bring more wealth and jobs to the US economy, and drive investment in the US natural gas Exploration and Production (E&P) sector.

Smart Grid Market Opportunity in China will be Difficult to Exploit for Foreign Smart Grid Vendors

LogoSmart Grid Market Opportunity in China will be Difficult to Exploit for Foreign Smart Grid Vendors - report provides an analysis of the market entry barriers for overseas vendors in Chinese smart grid market. Foreign smart grid vendors are finding it difficult to establish themselves in China, despite the country’s huge smart grid market. Government support and a large consumer base provide numerous smart grid market opportunities, but government preference for local equipment vendors and initiatives aimed at developing the country’s own smart grid standards puts foreign investors at a disadvantage, as evidenced in the low number of mergers, acquisitions and venture financing activities undertaken by overseas smart grid vendors. Other factors further barring the way for foreign investors is a lack of support from their own governments amid the ongoing financial crises in their countries.

Power Market Liberalization Will Facilitate the Penetration of Smart Grid Systems - Market Report

LogoPower Market Liberalization will Facilitate the Penetration of Smart Grid Systems report provides an analysis of the effects of power market liberalization on development of smart grid. Power market liberalization will facilitate the deployment of smart grid technologies by introducing privatization and leading to the growth of competition in the electricity sector. This level of competition prompts retailers to offer new technologies such as smart meters and in-home displays, which play a key role in helping consumers better manage their electricity consumption. Retailers also start offering flexible tariff programs incentivizing consumers’ energy saving and enabling demand response. Power market liberalization will also enable consumers to participate in demand response by utilizing the Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) installed at their premises. Privatization allows these DERs to sell their electricity to retailers or traders utilizing smart grid technologies like VPP and micro grid. Some of the countries that have already deregulated their electricity market include India and the US. However, a lot more is needed from governments of different countries to liberalize their electricity markets in order to facilitate the utilization of smart grid technologies.
