Homeshopping in Slovakia continued to be under a lot of pressure in 2013, especially from competing non-store categories such as internet retailing and direct selling. Store-based retailers have also proven to be strong competition with increasing levels of price promotions and advertising. Ordering products through catalogues is slowly becoming unfashionable as even large homeshopping retailers such as Halens spol (formerly Quelle) start to venture into internet retailing.

Overall, soft drinks posts moderate volume growth over 2013 and a favourable value increase as the result of rising prices derived from local currency devaluation. The low rate of recovery is attributable not only to a lower disposable income, but more important, to factors such as increasing import restrictions, local currency devaluation, shortages in supply of raw materials, uncertainty regarding the allocation of foreign currency exchange, and reforms in labour laws as well as labour...

RTD coffee experienced growth of 20% in off-trade value terms but saw a decline of 7% in off-trade volume terms in 2013. However, it should be noted that off-trade sales stood at a limited EUR2 million in 2013, as RTD coffee remained a niche category and the off-trade average unit prices saw a significant increase in 2013 causing off-trade volume sales to declined 7% as it is not something consumers can afford to buy frequently.

The Crohn's disease (CD) market is currently very dynamic, with novel biologic therapies on the horizon. These compounds will challenge the current biologics in an attempt to dislodge the stronghold of the TNF inhibitors, as they aim to tap into the lucrative portion of the CD therapeutics market. If their promising safety and efficacy profiles translate to clinical practice once they enter the market, their launch will be to the detriment of the existing market leaders, Remicade (infliximab) and Humira (adalimumab). The loss of patent protection of the anti-TNF marketed brands will allow for the emergence of biosimilars, such as Hospira's Inflectra (infliximab) a Remicade biosimilar. Focusing on country dynamics, Canada and the emerging markets of China and India will also play a key role in driving growth in the long term, with each market forecast to post positive Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGRs) from 2012 to 2022, primarily due to the anticipated strong uptake of Remicade over the forecast period.

Grocery retailers grew by 3% in current value terms in 2013, slightly up on the growth of the previous year. The cautious economic recovery encouraged some consumers to increase their spending on groceries, which helped boost sales over the previous year. However, the number of grocery retailers declined slightly in 2013, which held growth rates back. While channels that are typically cheaper, such as hypermarkets and discounters, saw the number of stores increase, many smaller outlets, such as...

We downgraded the growth forecast for the Russian IT market in the Q214 update in response to a weaker macroeconomic outlook and uncertainty arising from Russia's involvement in the security situation in Ukraine. Beyond this short-term drag on growth the Russian IT market has strong medium-term growth potential, but in the short term, growth has been hit by a weaker economic outlook and a steep decline in notebook sales in favour of low-cost tablets with a low penetration in devices and enterprise solutions - and an increasingly supportive regulatory and policy framework following WTO membership and state initiatives to promote IT development. Another area where we identify great opportunity is the Russia cloud computing market, which remains underdeveloped in early 2014, but will grow rapidly as education levels rise and operators continue to invest in network infrastructure. The picture is not positive across the board though, with pressure on retail hardware sales as a result of competition from low-cost tablets, meaning value growth will fail to keep pace with unit growth over the medium term.

The Asia Pacific market for point of care (PoC) diagnostics is expected to reach USD 5,427.1 million by 2020, according to a new study by Grand View Research, Inc. Growing base of geriatric population and the ability to render immediate results and improve patient care coupled with rising market penetration of PACS (picture archiving and communication systems) and EMR (electronic medical records) are expected to drive demand over the next six years. Skilled staff shortages, especially pertaining to the field of diagnostics are also expected to accelerate the market penetration rates of PoC products, by expediting lab automation processes. Rising demand for home healthcare and other healthcare establishments catering to the elderly population and initiatives undertaken by governments to shorten hospital stays by establishing out-patient care models are also expected to be key market factors.
