BMI's United States defence and security report examines the posture of the US armed forces, defence political decision making, the country's military industries and the US defence community in general. One of the major challenges currently facing the US relates to its defence budget. Defence spending in the United States is under severe pressure from the US Congress. Over 13 years of uninterrupted conflict in Afghanistan, coupled with prolonged military operations in Iraq, and shorter expeditionary campaigns in Libya, plus other worldwide US military obligations have resulted in the high levels of defence spending witnessed by the Pentagon today. In addition, these spending increases have occurred during a period of unprecedented financial pressure in the United States which has resulted in a severe contraction of consumer spending triggered by the financial crisis and the corresponding need for the government to reduce its spending levels.

Chile is one of the most attractive markets in Latin America, with political stability, natural resources and healthy economic growth all adding to its appeal. But in terms of energy, Chile's geography and considerable distances between urban areas and potential sources of power create challenges in the electricity market. Hydroelectricity accounts for around a third of production, but it is a sector shrouded in regulatory uncertainty and lengthy appeals processes. This quarter sees talk of new hydro projects, but that doesn't mean that these proposals will become a reality any time soon. In the thermal sector, gas-fired projects are gaining ground, and these will appeal because of their reliability when compared to renewable sources of power. That said, renewable energy will continue to play an increasing role in the electricity mix, with solar and wind power projects particularly popular.

BMI projects that Indian consumer electronics spending will grow by about 17% in US dollar terms in 2013 to US$37.5bn, fuelled by rising incomes, growing affordability, and the fact that 45% of India's population is under 25. PC market growth is currently being driven by laptops and by tablets, albeit sales of the latter are growing from a very small base. Meanwhile, sales of smartphones - including Apple's iPhone - are finally beginning to take off. Spending on consumer electronics devices is projected to grow at an overall CAGR of 14% through to the end of our five-year forecast to 2017, with the key segments including low-cost mobile handsets, colour TV sets, set-top boxes and notebook computers. Much of the growth during our forecast period will be driven by growing demand from India's underpenetrated rural areas. However, there are concerns a new import tax on handsets priced at above 2,000 rupees could constrain demand in this key product category.

BMI View: By some measures, the US farm sector is in the best financial conditions in decades. Farm and cash income in real terms are near 30-year highs, while financial leverage is at 50-year lows. The sector is also recovering from the droughts of 2012, although the grain sector should rebound faster than the livestock sector. However, the sector still faces concerns: Beef production will stagnate over the medium term, while we are forecasting a significant decline in cotton production for 2013/14. We have also revised lower our forecasts for pork production, beef consumption, and poultry production. The country's sugar sector is also suffering in the wake of lower average prices. Over the longer term, the sector will face some uncertainty as the Congress debates a new farm bill, and will have to adjust to a different subsidy program once a new bill is passed, along with lower crop prices. Nevertheless, we expect the US to remain the preeminent food producer and exporter in the world.

The list of confirmed participants for the 700MHz spectrum auction to be held in January 2014 was confirmed during this quarter but revealed no new interested parties, contrary to the hopes of the Canadian government. Laws regarding spectrum transfers, foreign ownership, network sharing as well as the dominance of the country's top three operators has created an unattractive environment for potential investors. BMI had been sceptical a fourth player would emerge in the 700MHz auction, and we believe this could lead to the government relaxing its stance on spectrum transfers, allowing consolidation among smaller players. The potential acquisition of Mobilicity by WIND Mobile could prove to be a test case for this, as we have long-held that the smaller players could rally around WIND as a potential challenger to the dominance of Telus, Rogers and Bell Canada. These newer, smaller players have experienced virtually no success with their low-cost prepaid business models, however, there are opportunities that could be attractive to a larger WIND company; high instances of higher value postpaid subscriptions and ARPU growth suggests there is a demand for 3G and 4G services in the country.

Though there have been signs over recent months that household consumption has recovered slightly, we remain fairly lukewarm in relation to Slovakia's near-term discretionary spending in the food and drink sector. Though easing slightly, unemployment remains above the 14% mark, while retail trade growth fell again in August 2013, having turned positive for the first time in 12 months in Q2 2013. Nevertheless, we expect the recovery in household spending to gain traction in 2014, and hold our forecast at 2.0%, implying a much more significant contribution of 1 percentage point to headline growth, which has relied solely on external demand since the economic crisis hit.

The competitive landscape of hemophilia A and B recombinant therapy in the US and 5EU is dominated by the use of recombinant FVIII and FIX replacement factors, and patients with severe forms of the disease receive frequent prophylactic infusions beginning from the first one or two years of life and often continuing through adulthood. However, the burden on patients and their families to maintain the prophylactic treatment schedule is high, and there is a significant unmet need for new therapies that can reduce the number of weekly prophylactic infusions and alleviate some of this treatment burden.

The outlook for Sri Lanka's pharmaceutical and healthcare has slipped since the update last quarter, which we believe is largely due to a weaker-than-expected economic performance that is feeding through to the healthcare sector. While we are encouraged by the government's focus on increasing local production of medicines, both on a national level and by inviting foreign investment, in January 2014, the government is likely to implement price controls on the pharmaceutical industry, which is likely to be detrimental to the pharmaceutical trade. However, the government temporarily lifted a ban on Indian companies that supply the vast majority of imported medicines in the country in October 2013, which should be trade positive.
