Golden writes from a unique perspective as he himself, in fact, lives with bipolar disease.

"I want to show that people with Bipolar Illness and other 'mental illnesses', as the press likes to describe them, can be productive members of society in any field. I am concerned that the stigma of mental disorders is increasing because of the awful frequency of tragedies such as in our schools and workplaces," said Paul. "I see this as in part due to the lagging availability of psychological care compared to other disease processes in our health care system."

Golden first noticed symptoms while dealing with a mysterious bout of depression during medical school. The years to follow were a mental roller coaster ride through his medical internship, residency and practice. In his next book, "The Bipolar Physician – A Story of Struggle, Survival and Success", due out in the next few months, Golden details the sometimes hilarious and sometimes tragic tales.

After graduating from the Horace Mann School for Boys in New York City in 1966, Dr. Paul Golden, M.D., went on to Yale, graduating Magna Cum Laude with Special Achievements in Biology in 1970. He did his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California at San Francisco. After two more years in fellowship in nephrology Golden went out in the world to practice and joined the first nephrologist in Modesto.

Golden is married to Sue, his rock, and has two grown children Tina and Thomas, now 34 and 30 and three granddaughters. Since retirement he has written "An Insider's View of Bipolar Disease: with the invaluable help of Gail Woodward of Dudley Court Press.
