Dr. Brogna Helps Snorers and Sleepers Who Suffer with Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Bensalem, PA -- (SBWIRE) -- 10/14/2014 -- Sleeping with a bedmate that snores gets real old real quick. Not only is snoring annoying and interruptive to a good night’s sleep, if it becomes Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) it becomes dangerous to the person who is snoring and who stops breathing numerous times during the night until that person gasps for air and the OSA cycle starts all over again. Fortunately, Dr. Michael Brogna has discovered a custom-made device, consisting of upper and lower dental plates that allow individuals to stop snoring and to sleep more comfortably if they do suffer from OSA.

The SomnoMed MAS is a Mandibular Advancement Splint (MAS) that treats snoring and mild to moderate Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) by simply moving the lower jaw slightly forward. The forward movement by the splint tightens the soft tissue and muscles of the upper airway, which prevents obstruction of the airway while the individual sleeps. “The most common cause of snoring is the tissues vibrating in the upper airway as air passes over them,” remarks Dr. Brogna. The tightening by the device prevents this vibration.

The SomnoMed MAS features a unique patented fin-coupling component, which allows the mouth to open and close normally. Dr. Brogna says, “The device is more comfortable than others because of an adjustable component and the design has a number of key features that are significant improvements on existing OSA oral appliances, making this device both comfortable and effective.”

This is a highly effective solution for patients with mild to moderate OSA, who prefer oral devices to CPAP therapy. Now, for some stats in clinical studies, 91% of patients reported substantial improvement in sleep quality, 87.5% of patients reported nightly use, and 96% of patients stated they would likely continue the use of the SomnoMed MAS.

Dr. Brogna received the prestigious Fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. This award is only bestowed upon dentists who exemplify a commitment to continuing education and outstanding patient care. Fellowships are important to dentists because they allow the dentist to offer cutting-edge care to their patients. Dentists need to complete 500 hours of continuing education in various disciplines before passing a rigorous examination. It is tough, but it is worth it to make sure patients are getting the best care possible. Only seven percent of dentists have achieved Fellowship status.
