Dr. Timm Makes Going to the Dentist a Happy Experience for Children

Every parent worries about their child’s first visit to the dentist, and so does Dr. Timm. His mission is to make the visit as fun as possible, and it all starts with the parents.

Oakdale, MN -- (SBWIRE) -- 06/27/2014 -- Dr. Timm states, “I am confident that the visit will give the parents and child the tools needed to achieve great oral health to last a lifetime.” Dr. Timm knows that each child is unique and that he needs to provide a positive experience for the child.

It is the goal of All Family Dental that children leave the office with a positive attitude towards dental treatment. Dr. Timm and his staff also ensure the parents will feel comfortable in their role as the main caregiver in the child’s oral health. Dr. Timm believes prevention of oral disease is a team effort and it includes the parents’ involvement and commitment while in the office and at home.

A child’s first dental check-up should take place around their first birthday and Dr. Timm offers suggestions to prepare for that first visit: Explain to the child that Dr. Timm will look inside the mouth and use a tiny mirror to see their teeth better. If all 20 of the baby teeth have come in, prepare the child for the possibility that Dr. Timm or a member of his team may want to clean the teeth with a toothbrush and some toothpaste. Let the child know that Dr. Timm will answer any questions the child may ask. Avoid using words such as needles, shots, drill and other words that are likely to frighten the child. Another way to create positive feelings about dental visits is to remind the child that going to the dentist is a sign of growing up.

Expect there to be bumps along the journey. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), trauma most often happens to baby teeth at two to three years old when motor skills are developing. There will be bumps and tumbles, but establishing a dental home early-on is the first step in preparing for possible tooth trauma. As a father and children’s dentist, Dr. Timm knows the stress dental trauma can be for the child and the parents, but accidents do happen as children develop their motor skills.
