Cats and dogs with Dipylidium caninum, Taenia pisiformis and dogs with Taenia pisiformis, Echinococcus granulosus, and Echinococcus multilocularis infections are treated with praziquantel. It is believe that the drug kills the parasites by paralyzing them or are inhibited from making a component of their DNA.
An animal can take praziquantel with or without food. The tablet can be given orally or crushed and added to food. Depending on the type of parasite being killed, more than one treatment may be necessary.
Once the parasite is killed, it is destroyed and will not been seen in the feces. Vomiting, anorexia, lethargy and diarrhea were reported in some dogs. Cats may experience diarrhea or drooling while taking praziquantel. Sedation or staggering may also occur while on the drug and should be used cautiously in sick animals.
