Faraji A Rosenthall Questions How Many Virginia Lifers Are Innocent?

According to Faraji A. Rosenthall, there may be serious miscarriages of justice going on in our judicial system when it comes to finding criminals guilty. Evidence hints that many behind bars should not be there.

Fairfax, VA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/20/2014 -- Many people aren’t aware, but in the state of Virginia, only one person has ever been exonerated from death row: Earl Washington Jr.

“For many, this sounds like a great statistic,” says Fairfax criminal lawyer Faraji A. Rosenthall, “since it appears the justice system is very efficient. However, this isn’t the case at all. The numbers surrounding wrongful convictions in this country are alarming.”

The United States remains the only Western democracy that still carries out the death penalty. The majority of executions happen in the South and from 1976 to 2010 in Virginia alone, there were 108 of them. According to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, about twice as many innocent, incarcerated people have been sentenced to death as have been exonerated.

“The truth is that the United States’ execution system is riddled with error, and much of it is unfairly slanted toward individuals of particular socioeconomic status, race, and geography,” says Fairfax criminal lawyer Faraji A. Rosenthall. “It also harms our status in the eyes of other countries and makes it difficult for us to work in human rights. Not to mention, the inaccuracies in the system are absolutely appalling.”

There’s a large chance that many incarcerated in Virginia’s prisons are completely innocent of their accused crimes. They may have fallen prey to a poorly handled justice system and poor lawyer representation.

“There has even been evidence of drunken lawyers representing the accused,” Fairfax DUI lawyer Faraji A. Rosenthall continues. “Some lawyers have literally slept through trials. It’s a disgrace to the American justice system, and it is certainly not what the American people deserve.”

Faraji A. Rosenthall wants everyone to be aware of the massive injustices occurring in the legal system. It’s important to take a hard look at the legal process, particularly when it comes to Virginian “criminals” who may be imprisoned or on death row for a crime they didn’t actually commit. “Staying vigilant is important,” Rosenthall says.
