Flea and Heartworm Prevention for Pets Sentinel P

Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 05/22/2014 -- Prevents flea infestations (Ctenocephalides felis), heartworm infections (Dirofilaria immitis). It also controls adult hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), removes and controls roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) and whipworms (Thrichuris vulpis). Whipworm (Trichuris vulpis) is a parasitic worm living in the intestines of dogs. Animals pick up whipworm eggs through contaminated food, water, soil or feces. Affected dogs are suffering from poor appetite, bloody stool, diarrhea and anemia. If left untreated, severely affected animals can die.

Pet Symptions:
Fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) are non-flying parasitic insects feeding on blood of animals and humans. They have a four-stage life cycle. It takes between 2 to 3 weeks for eggs to complete their life cycle. They are visible by the naked eye, but very small and difficult to detect. Fleas are biting and chewing through the dog’s skin and causing discomfort. Animals are scratching and biting the affected areas of the skin, causing the visible irritation with redness, swelling and crusts.

Heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a parasitic worm living in the lung arteries and the heart of the dog. Dirofilaria is transmitted through a mosquito bite. Once they enter the body, immature larvae go through the series of life stages, travelling from subcutaneous tissue through muscles and blood vessels to lung arteries and the right part of the heart. In heart chambers and lung arteries they achieve adult size, mate and complete their life cycle. The entire development lasts 6 months. Infected dogs usually show no symptoms until the worms have reached the heart and lung arteries. Early symptoms are coughing and exercise intolerance; gradually developing into weight loss, coughing of blood and heart failure.
Roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina) is a parasitic worm living in the intestines of dogs. Adult animals ingest the roundworm eggs in contaminated food, water, feces or vomit. Puppies can get infected during pregnancy or by drinking milk from an infected mother. During their life cycle, roundworms can migrate through the liver and lungs and cause damages of those organs. Infected dog has swollen abdomen, is lethargic, without appetite, coughing, vomiting.

Pet Ailments:
Flea bites can often lead to severe skin infections and allergic reactions. Fleas can cause anemia in young animals. They often transmit tapeworms.Heartworm causes severe health issues such as pneumonia, abnormal clotting, heart arrhythmias and congestive heart failure.Roundworm can cause abnormalities of the nervous system, damages of the liver and spleen.Hookworm infections can cause severe complications, such as pneumonia, anemia, protein deficiency, heart failure and ascites.
Whipworms can lead to severe anemia, stunted growth, dehydration and even death if left untreated.

Relative Info On Breeds Most Associated With This Ailment:
There is no particular breed predisposition for any of parasitic infestations in dogs. All dog breeds are susceptible to fleas, heartworms, hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.

How It Works:
Sentinel has two active ingredients: milbemycin oxime and lufenuron. Milbemycin oxime is a potent antiparasitic drug successfully fighting internal and external parasites. It disrupts the nerve transmission within the parasite and leads to its death. Milbemycin oxime effectively kills larval stages of the heartworm, and the adult stages of hookworm, roundworm and whipworm. The other active ingredient of Sentinel, lufenuron, inhibits the development of flea eggs and breaks the life cycle of fleas. However, it does not kill adult fleas. The protective effect of Sentinel lasts for a month against fleas, heartworm, hookworm, roundworm and whipworm.

Directions For Use:
Sentinel should be administered according to the veterinary instructions. The tablets are intended for oral administration. To achieve optimal absorption, it is best to administer Sentinel tablets with the usual meal. Since they are flavored, most of the dogs ingest them willingly. If the dog hesitates to take the Sentinel tablet, is should be administered like the other drugs for oral administration. To achieve full protective effect against all the listed parasites, Sentinel must be reapplied monthly, preferably on the same date each month.

Dosage And Administration:
Sentinel flavored tablets are available in four strengths, each of them providing the minimum of 0.23 mg/lb (0.5 mg/kg) of milbemycin oxime and 4.55 mg/lb (10 mg/kg) of lufenuron. For dogs over 100 lbs, an appropriate combination of tablets should be used.
