Quito, Pichincha -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/07/2014 -- While the Galapagos Islands animals are world famous due to their exclusiveness and friendly nature, it has been reported recently that the legendary Galapagos tortoise might not become completely extinct, as was anticipated earlier, by scientists. Though much of the flora and fauna of Pacific Islands were destroyed due to the invasions, it has been recently found out through the studies of genetics of the tortoise that the race of these tortoises can be restored using the resupply of the mariners who used to preserve the species in order to gather food supplies for their future voyage.
As revealed by Nature Galapagos and Ecuador in a recently held seminar, population of the Galapagos tortoise was often visited by mariners and they used to contain some hybrids that represented two species together, which were extinct in their own Islands. Since these tortoises could survive for months without any water or food, they were an ideal food supply for the mariners. What used to happen is they were brought there from other Islands to improve their population in such a place which can be accessed easily for resupply.
The hardiness, plenty of flesh and slow movements used to make these tortoises the perfect food for the sailors who had to stop at these Islands during the Pacific voyages. These sailors had a habit of taking hundreds of these tortoises along with them. The hunting activities of the local residents, too, acted as a major cause of extinction of these tortoises. However, years of research, performed by the scientists, found a trace of considerable number of hybrid tortoises in the different Islands and there have been numerous attempts to find mark their locations and numbers so that they could be monitored after analysis. Following the method of ‘Galapagos conservancy’, the restoration of the species has been assured. This process has definitely advanced conservation theory and science in Galapagos, and the conservation planning is considered to be one of the high priorities of the Ecuadorian government.
Those who have special interest in wildlife and won’t like to miss the chance to visit these tortoises must opt for Galapagos Islands holidays. While one might wonder what is the exact way to reach these Islands and visit the animals in their natural habitat, Galapagos land tours, arranged by reputed agencies like Nature Galapagos and Ecuador, act as the perfect solution. These tours are the ideal combination of visiting the pristine Islands with breathtaking views along with viewing the animals like penguins, blue footed boobies, sharks, marine iguanas, flamingos, and tortoises from close quarters.
