Home Cooking Can Solve Food Waste Crisis According to Online Kitchenware Retailer PRIMUS

A leading online kitchenware retailer entered the controversy over food waste this week by advocating more home cooking as part of the solution. PRIMUS is a UK-based retailer that launched last year in the competitive Home & Garden sector.

Stourbridge, UK -- (ReleaseWire) -- 04/09/2014 -- A report from the House of Lords published on the 7th April urged retailers to end such promotions as BOGOF (Buy one get one free) in an effort to reduce the estimated 15m tonnes of food wasted in the UK each year. The House of Lords European Union Committee also warned retailers to behave more responsibly with farmers and avoid cancelling orders at the last minute. Retailers fought back, however as the British Retail Consortium said: "The government's own research body has concluded there is no evidence that promotions increase food waste. It is also worth remembering all major retailers are working to challenging government targets to cut food waste. Cutting food waste is a key sustainability issue but we need to focus on evidence based policy rather than being distracted by perception."

Vicky Tomline, Head of Sales at PRIMUS spoke this week about food waste: “One thing is clear – more home baking and cooking can reduce the amount of food waste, help the environment and also help reduce the amount spent on food. Home cooking can often be healthier too and provide important life lessons for children in the home.”

Government backed campaigns such as ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ have sought to educate the public in the benefits of home cooking – and the proliferation of TV chefs and bakers seems to indicate a growing receptiveness to home cooking.

Vicky added “With a little pre-planning and some thought about what items to cook, households can make a big impact on reducing food waste. A few basic kitchenware items are all that are needed to make a start – it’s not necessary to buy expensive all-singing-all-dancing items to begin with. Home cooked food can be stored or frozen for use throughout the week and with a little imagination leftovers also make tasty meals too!”

PRIMUS is an online retailer of items for home & garden. Based in the West Midlands, it sources high quality items from well-known brands and up-and-coming names. It aims to become the most trusted name in the Homewares sector – offering an unparalleled range and exceptional service.

Vicky concluded “Retailers certainly have a role to play in reducing food waste but we can all make a contribution to this growing problem.”
