How Snoring Affects Your Body and Mind During the Day

The importance of uninterrupted sleep for success in life

Dallas, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/28/2014 -- As part of Steven Sanders’ investigation into the effects of snoring and anti-snoring devices, he looked at the value of sleep on routine activities and the ability to be successful.

“The most alarming report about the side effects of snoring was in the report from the National Heart, Blood and Lung Institute when they discussed the connection between hyperactivity, problem behavior and children’s ability to learn and retain information with snoring. The report stopped short of associating ADHD with snoring in children,” Sanders explained “but I couldn’t help but wonder if regenerative sleep could be the answer behind the increase in diagnosed cases of ADHD in children and adults.”

People don’t normally think of snoring as reaching the level to be listed as a method of “sleep deprivation” but in many cases, it is. Snoring triggers a mechanism in the brain to jar the body from a deep sleep into a semi-conscious sleep in order to restore normal breathing. If this occurs several times a night as it often does, the body is deprived of the rejuvenating sleep that is required for healthy living.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, “Sleep deprived people who are tested by using a driving simulator … perform as badly or worse than those who are intoxicated.” Since snoring deprives both the sufferer and his sleeping partner of that healing sleep, both are affected with the same dysfunction.

The National Sleep Foundation says symptoms of snoring deprived sleep include weight gain, daytime grogginess, headaches on waking and changes in your ability to remember, concentrate or pay attention to details that you would normally observe.

Other side effects of snoring are discussed in detail by research results from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and reported on the U.S. Department of Health website. Diabetes – especially Type 2 which is associated with being overweight – significantly increases in those who get an inadequate amount of sleep. “Evidence is growing that sleep is a powerful regulator of appetite, energy use and weight control”, the report states.

Research also showed that inadequate sleep reduces the ability of the body to invigorate the immune system and can even affect how the body responds to vaccines, such as the flu vaccine. There is a growing amount of evidence that lack of sleep or continuously disrupted healing sleep night after night may be a major contributing factor for post-partum depression and infertility.

“It is due to discovery of all these side-effects of snoring that I became committed to finding an effective anti-snoring mouth guard.” said Sanders “This is my way of helping others find a way to a healthier life. Knowing that lack of sleep carries over into how well you function for years ahead, as well as how it impacts others in your family, touched me deeply.”
