Incontinence in Saudi Arabia - New Market Study Published

Recently published research from Euromonitor International, "Incontinence in Saudi Arabia", is now available at Fast Market Research

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/08/2014 -- Incontinence is a widespread problem in Saudi Arabia. A study of 6,600 women aged 20 years and over was published by Alfaisal University's College of Medicine in 2012, with this finding that 29% of respondents suffered from urinary incontinence. Risk factors included older age and large baby birth weight, but were also linked to the common health problems of obesity and diabetes. There is thus a large potential consumer base for incontinence in the country. However, most of those suffering from incontinence in the Alfaisal University study did not seek medical care, with only 9% of respondents seeking medical advice. Most women suffer in silence, whilst many also use pantyliners or towels in lieu of incontinence products. This is mainly due to taboos surrounding incontinence, with many sufferers being reluctant to discuss these issues even with a doctor. In addition, the high price of incontinence products encourages many to opt for sanitary protection products instead.

Competitive Landscape

Hygienic Paper (Fine) and National Paper Products were strong leaders in incontinence throughout the review period, and accounted for 31% and 34% volume shares respectively in 2013.. These players were early pioneers in incontinence in Saudi Arabia, and have the strongest distribution networks. They also offer brands with a strong reputation for quality, with National Paper Products offering Sanita Elegance and Hygienic Paper offering Fine Life.

Industry Prospects

Growth in incontinence will continue to be constrained by the social taboos surrounding this ailment. Whilst a large number of adults suffer from incontinence, due to the high incidence of obesity and diabetes in the country, most are too embarrassed to seek advice or to buy incontinence products.
