Boston, MA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 06/25/2014 -- Canada has one of the highest rates of internet penetration in the world. According to Statistics Canada, over 80% of Canadian households in metropolitan areas and over 70% of Canadian households in rural areas have access to the internet. Additionally, according to the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), in 2012, fixed and mobile broadband was available to 99% of Canadian households. In the same year, 78% of Canadians subscribed to high-speed internet service. Furthermore, 81% of Canadians subscribed to a wireless service, of which 52% used smartphones, tablets and other advanced handheld devices. Additionally, according to CRTC, the percentage of households with download speed of at least 5 Mbps increased from 54% in 2011 to 62% in 2012.

The Canadian internet retail landscape is becoming more fragmented as more retailers are entering the space, being domestic or foreign based. On the whole, Amazon continues to be in the lead, with close to a 31% value share of sales for combined amazon.com and amazon.ca. The company still has a strong reputation in Canada and has been actively supporting its Canadian branch, with amazon.ca adding more products and product categories to its line-up, such as an increased number of beauty care products and groceries. The latter were added in late 2013 and widely publicised in Canadian media. However, while actual sales through Amazon sites remained positive, the share in percentage terms witnessed a decline as more retailers entered the fast growing e-commerce.

After years of slow growth and lagging behind major developed markets, the Canadian online retailer has been picking up steam with more retailers entering e-commerce and improvements made in merchandise selection, shopping experience and delivery as well as a variety of other options and services, including loyalty programmes, which help to draw consumer attention. Furthermore, an increased number of mobile apps and increased ability to shop online through mobile devices in Canada is also expected to push sales forward.
