With spending capabilities limited, Irish consumers were more likely to consider holidaying at home, eliminating the initial travel costs associated with air or sea travel.

Industry Prospects

Domestic tourism is expected to record a volume CAGR of 5% over the forecast period to reach 9.5 million trips in 2018. In the short-term, the impact of austerity measures on disposable incomes can be expected to have serious implications for future tourism by Irish residents on both domestic and international fronts. Whilst the Irish are loath to give up taking even a short break, the practicalities of financing trips, however short, will pose a severe limit to growth beyond this level.
