Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 09/16/2014 -- Aerolineas Argentinas closed the 2013 fiscal year with a deficit of US$247 million - 44% lower than the 2012 deficit of US$447. According to Mr Mariano Recalde, Aerolineas Argentina's President, the number of passengers carried, flight hours and incomes increased in 2013. Despite this improvement of the company's economic situation in January 2014, the Federal Government accelerated the devaluation of the Peso to 30% (from ARS6 to ARS8 per dollar) - a development which is expected to negatively impact Aerolineas' results in the short term due to increasing fuel oil, aircraft leasing and labour costs. As of February 2014, it was not yet clear if the Peso devaluation would positively impact incoming tourism flows and thus help the nationalised airline face its increasing costs because the Federal Government did not have any plan to control high inflation, which would erase any benefits associated with the Peso devaluation in the short term.

Industry Prospects:

Air will lead growth during the forecast period, with constant 2013 price value sales projected to increase at a CAGR of 6% as a consequence of domestic tourism flow growth and the fact that it is expected that, at least until 2015, prices will remain competitive in comparison with long distance bus/coach transportation operators. Aerolineas Argentinas plans to incorporate four more Airbus A330 and A340 aircraft in 2015 and 2016 in order to operate more domestic, regional and international routes during the forecast period. Meanwhile, chauffeur-driven car and rail are expected to record the worst performances, with the area having respective projected forecast period constant 2013 price value CAGRs of 1% and 2%, mainly due to cultural factors and the lack of policies to develop railway transportation, which has been practically non-existent since 1990-2000, when several railways were closed.
