Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/21/2014 -- Maropitant (Cerenia®) is an anti-emetic, a drug that prevents vomiting due to many different causes. Its main indication is for dogs who throw up because of motion sickness from riding in the car. It is also given to dogs who throw up because of parvovirus, pancreatitis and chemotherapy. It works by binding to certain receptors in an area of the brain called the “vomiting center” that causes vomiting when activated. Maropitant binds to them and prevents activation. Dogs as young as two months and four month old cats can take the drug.
It is a very strong drug, with one dose stopping vomiting for a day. If should be given in five day increments, stopped for a day and then that restarted on the seventh day. When using it for car sickness in dogs, the animal should be given a meal, then maropitant one hour later with a two hour time period to let the drug take effect before hitting the road.Epakitin Research has shown that it may also manage pain in cats and dogs. It is important the maropitant not be given in a treat because that upsets their stomach and treats high in fat can lower the drug’s effectiveness. Reduced appetite, drooling, drowsiness and diarrhea can occur but side effects are rare with this drug.
