Fast Market Research recommends "Grocery Retailers in Morocco" from Euromonitor International, now available

Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/20/2015 -- In 2014 Morocco witnessed the expansion of supermarkets and hypermarkets all over the country. Both Marjane Holding and Label?Vie are racing against each other to occupy ground in different regions. Their strategies are to expand using their well-known supermarkets Acima and Carrefour Market in large cities, whilst they are now launching outlets in second-tier cities such as Oujda and Khouribga. This strategy does not aim to serve only people who live within these cities, but also people coming from smaller cities nearby, as small grocery retailers do not offer a large variety of products like supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Competitive Landscape

Grocery retailers was still led by companies operating in hypermarkets and supermarkets in Morocco in 2014. Marjane Holding was still the leading company with a 44% market share, whilst recording around 9% in grocery retailing. Marjane Holding is now also present in discounters, after the launch of its new discounter Xpress Market late in May 2014 in Casablanca.

Industry Prospects

Over the long term, consumers in Morocco will shift from traditional grocery retailers to modern grocery retailers. This is already being seen in large cities, mainly because of the strong expansion of supermarkets, hypermarkets and discounters. The aggressive discounts, appealing prices and low-priced products offered by modern grocery retailers attract a large number of middle- and low-income consumers in Morocco. This trend is expected to intensify over the coming five years, especially as modern grocery retailers operated by Marjane Holding and Label?Vie are expanding to second-tier cities.
