This was a continuation of the trend already seen in 2012, as many operators started to quit the business; no longer finding it profitable due to the ongoing crisis affecting Italy. The depressing economic situation, which more and more Italians were experiencing first-hand, led consumers to be very careful of their out-of-home and non-essential expenses. Although the number of closures was less dramatic if compared with 2012, 2013 still saw 3,170 fewer outlets overall across the nation, with most closures happening in city centres.

Competitive Landscape

Independent operators dominate full-service restaurants in Italy, with chained outlets only amounting to 748 in total in 2013. Amongst chained full-service restaurants, Rossopomodoro from Gruppo Sebeto and Old Wilde West from Compagnia Generale Ristorazione led with shares of 22% and 12% in value terms respectively. Old Wilde West is a North American casual full-service restaurant, and has been increasing its presence in Italy by increasing the number of outlets, and has been becoming increasingly popular amongst Italian youngsters and families for its affordable menu and relaxed atmosphere. In 2013 the brand recorded the biggest increase in value share.

Over the forecast period full-service restaurants is expected to see a decrease in terms of value sales at constant 2013 prices, although this is a less steep decline than during the review period. As the Italian economy is set to show signs of improvement from the end of 2014, Italians are expected to have more discretionary spending. More consumers are likely to feel less anxious about out-of-home spending, and allow themselves an evening meal in a restaurant more frequently than during the review period.
