Boston, MA -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/10/2012 -- The written premium of the Portuguese non-life insurance segment decreased during the review period. The decrease was a result of reduced property demand in the domestic market, decreased passenger car sales and limited motor and property insurance demand. The segmental growth was further decelerated by the weak economic development and ongoing sovereign debt crisis in key EU member states. High unemployment levels and a marginal decline in annual disposable income also delayed liability insurance policy sales and discouraged overall growth in the non-life segment. However, the Portuguese government took a number of actions, including an economic stimulus package which aimed to spur the country's economy on and improve macroeconomic fundamentals.
