Generations United reports that more than 7.8 million children across the country live in households maintained by grandparents. The phenomenon has become such a part of the American family that a term has been coined to define them as “grandfamilies.” Some grandfamilies are multigenerational households where the parents work long hours and want the child close to family during work hours or during summer when children or out of school. In others, grandparents or other relatives have stepped in to keep children out of foster care when parents were unable to care for them.
