Plastic Surgery - Millions of Botox Treatments Performed in 2013

According to a report recently released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than six million Botox treatments were performed in 2013 making it the most popular minimally invasive cosmetic procedure. Dr. Simon Ourian of Epione Beverly Hills says that he expects to see an increase in the number of cosmetic minimally invasive procedures across the board in 2014.

Beverly Hills, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/14/2014 -- The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released their annual Plastic Surgery Statistics Report (see: goo.gl/II763I). Once again, and by a wide margin, Botox procedures top the list with 6.32 million treatments performed in 2013. This is a 3% increase from 2012 and a 703% increase compared to 2000. The most popular surgical procedure in 2013 were breast augmentation, rhinoplasty (nose reshaping), and eyelid surgery. While breast augmentations and eyelid surgery numbers were up 1% over 2012, rhinoplasty procedures performed were down 9%.

“I’m not surprised that the number of Botox and dermal filler injections were up over 2012; I see the increases reflected in my practice,” says Dr. Simon Ourian, Medical Director of Epione Beverly Hills. “Given the advent of new skin tightening technologies, I’m not all that surprised that the numbers for facelifts and neck lifts stayed relatively flat.”

Plastic surgery procedures done for reconstructive purposes also showed an up-tick in 2013. There was an approximately 2 percent increase in these types of procedures. Most of these reconstructive procedures were undertaken to remove tumors. In addition, a smaller number of these surgeries were done to repair lacerations, reduce the appearance of scars, repair hands, and reconstruct breasts.

Propelling the rise in the overall number of plastic surgeries procedures may be due to advances in technology and techniques that are used. Advances include breast implants utilizing a type of form-stable silicone gel and Juvéderm Voluma, the first hyaluronic acid dermal filler with FDA approval for restoring cheek fullness. Though any surgery is still a risk, procedures are less invasive and the risks may be lower today than they ever have been before.

“I’m looking forward to 2014,” says Dr. Ourian, “I expect that we’ll continue to see increases in the number of minimally invasive treatments performed. We can do so much more today than ever before without surgery.”
