Hialeah Gardens, FL -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/28/2014 -- Ichon is used to prevent intra-peritoneal adhesions after surgical procedures. Commonly used in gynecological procedures, this product strengthens post-surgical sight of incision and healing time. A gynecological procedure refers to the removal of reproductive organs in the female. Gynecological procedures, also called spays in dogs/cats, are performed for a number of reasons. Preventing pregnancy is the number one reason animal handlers decide to remove reproductive organs. Other reasons for this surgical procedure include; reducing chances of mammary cancer (breast cancer), prevention of uterine or ovarian cancer, pyometra (infection of the uterus), and ovarian cysts.

Ailment Associated with Product:
Mammary cancer (breast cancer), uterine or ovarian cancer, pyometra (infection of the uterus), or ovarian cysts can cause serious medical problems in pets. A pet which has developed these conditions may display vaginal discharge, pain the abdominal region, develop a fever, become depressed, and have an abnormal heat cycle. A pet which has been diagnosed with such a condition will require a gynecological procedure.

The surgical procedure for a gynecological procedure in a dog or cat is quite quick. The pet will be admitted to the clinic, with an empty stomach and bladder the day of the surgery. It is important pet owners do not allow pets to eat or drink as relaxation of sphincter muscles is common under anesthesia. The veterinary staff will administer the patient a light anesthetic and pre-surgery NSAID. Once the patient is relaxed, the patient will be taken to a sterile room to be given gas anesthetic. At this time the pet will be comfortable and asleep, as the veterinarian may inject a localized anesthetic to prevent feeling to the abdominal region (location where incision will be made). The veterinarian will remove the entire uterus including uterine horns from the female, lavage the incision site, and suture the wound site closed. The surgery itself will last approximately 25-30 minutes yet an hour over al with anesthesia. The patient will then be sent home with a pain medication to recover. The recovery time for a cat or dog is approximately five days without complications. A gynecological procedure in a horse involves the same basic principle but takes more time. The reasoning behind a longer surgery time is simple; horses are much larger than a cat or dog.
