Altadena, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 01/27/2014 --Doctors and other healthcare professionals can now easily determine any symptoms on drug abuse, as a new study suggests, using a single question for diagnosis.

The study was conducted at the Boston Medical Center primary care clinic in which about 300 participants joined. The lead author of the study, Dr. Richard Saitz, said it their press release that, "We found that single questions may be useful in both screening and preliminary assessment." Dr. Saitz is a professor of the community health sciences in Boston University School of Public Health.

He added, "Instead of extensive interviews or long questionnaires, which are a barrier to screening in primary care settings, this approach may make it much easier to identify and appropriately address unhealthy substance use.”

The process of the study involved participants being asked the number of times they have consumed drinks in a day. The participants also answered another question about the frequency of their use of illegal drugs with no medical reason.

The result of the study shows that 88 percent of the participants have alcohol dependency, while 97 percent have drug dependence. The results have just verified the study published by the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, published January. As such, drug abuse problems can be more useful if obtained easily on actual screening time.

Saitz said, "We're moving from identifying the problem to being able to gauge, in a relatively quick and simple way, whether it is severe enough to warrant more urgent attention.”
