Two dads, a pediatrician and a web designer, write a charming, age-appropriate book to instill an early love of code for kids under 5.

Boston, MA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/04/2014 --ABCs of the Web is a child's first introduction to the language of the web using the ABCs, beautiful imagery, and fun rhymes.

Children under 5 are generally not developmentally prepared to learn programming because they have not yet developed the prerequisite milestones such as understanding cause-effect relationships, serial ordering, quantity conservation and hierarchical classification. Although children under 5 exhibit the beginnings of these capacities, they first need to learn to identify objects before performing operations with them.

ABCs of the Web caters to infants’ and toddlers’ unique cognitive capacities to deliver an age-appropriate learning experience through reading and play. This book is a fun learning experience for the whole family with a wide range of technology terms that will enable parents to model active learning for their children.

Andrey and John were inspired to write ABCs of the Web by their small children. But they aim to use the book to tackle larger issues pertaining to childhood obesity and disparities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

A major problem among children is the excessive about of time children spend in front of screens (TV, computer, iPads, etc). According to research published in the journal Pediatrics, obesity is directly proportional to screen time. Yet, screen time is largely unavoidable in technology education. So Andrey and John created a paper-book learning experience rather than an eReader to support technology education while limiting screen time.

Additionally, the authors have partnered with several organizations including UpLiftDC and the Boston University Community Service Center to distribute their books to urban underserved families and children.To program, the child's brain needs to be developed enough to understand cause-effect relationships, serial ordering, quantity conservation and hierarchical classification. Although children under 5 exhibit the beginnings of these capacities, they first need to learn to identify objects before performing operations with them.

ABCs of the Web reinforces object permanence with its physical quality of turning pages. The motor task of turning pages also stimulates proprioceptive memory for infants and toddlers that are learning their physical environment.

Additionally, the timing of alliteration and repetition provides an auditory stimulus that is musically rewarding and reigns in the 10 second attention of small children. The basic use of letters as symbols represents the essential words of web development. To ensure the right level of visual engagement, the book achieves just the right balance of color contrast.

It's difficult to compete with the big names in children's publishing. Andrey and John need to fulfill a minimum order to keep the cost of book production affordable. By pledging as little as $5 for this book, supporters will make it possible for the authors to fill the minimum-required bulk print run.
