South Padre Island Prepares for 2014 Spring Break 'Invasion' - As Students Favor Domestic Destinations

Though wild times have traditionally been spent in far-off locations such as Cancun and the Caribbean, rising flight prices are keeping hundreds of thousands of students on home soil. With destinations such as Texas’s South Padre Island expecting an influx of young people over previous years, travel experts believe it’s a trend that will continue long into the future.

South Padre Island, TX -- (ReleaseWire) -- 02/12/2014 --Even though Spring Break is traditionally the annual highlight for millions of university and college students, 2014 is seeing plans come together at a pace never seen before. However, industry experts are reporting a series of new and exciting trends, with young people favoring domestic destinations such as South Padre Island and Panama City Beach over traditional hotspots such as Cancun and the Caribbean.

“Things are really being shaken up – but for the better,” says Chad Hart, President of the Inertia Tours Spring Break Travel Group. “Domestic Spring Break destinations that can be reached by car are going to be the most popular, as students demand flexible travel dates and four to five-night trips that are cheaper than flying.”

Continuing, “Bookings to Cancun and the Dominican Republic are noticeably down due to increasing air fares and lack of flexibility. However, students can drive to South Padre Island in Texas on a schedule that suits them. With domestic destinations in abundance, we’re predicting that Spring Break travel numbers will be up almost seven percent when compared with last year.”

Hart and his staff at Inertia Tours have also noticed many students choosing to travel earlier, with the first wave expected to start flowing as early as the send week in February.

“We actually got caught off-guard during the last two weeks of December. With the Polar vortex blanketing much of the country, students in both the United States and Canada decided to book their trips earlier than previous years as they yearned for a warm beach. While March 8th to March 30th will remain the most popular Spring Break weeks, we are seeing many people travel much earlier than they normally would,” he adds.

Media attention is also raising the profile of destinations such as South Padre Island and Panama City Beach. As a long-time and popular broadcast spot for networks including The Travel Channel, E! Entertainment and MTV, the profile of domestic Spring Break destinations has never been higher.

“Of course, it also boils down to the age-old influence of gas prices!” Hart admits. “With tickets to foreign destinations often pushing $700, the idea of bundling six friends into Dad’s Tahoe and driving from Missouri to South Padre for $70 each is extremely attractive, and can you blame them? There’s no international comparison to the dirt-cheap cost of a domestic Spring Break trip.”
