The study examined body mass index, development, and academic performance in young adults between ages 18 and 29 conceived through IVF and young adults from the same age group conceived without IVF and found no significant difference between the two groups. The study was conducted by Professor Jane Fisher and Dr. Karin Hammarberg, staff members at the Jean Hailes Research Unit at Monash University and the results were published in recently in the journal Fertility and Sterility. In one of the largest and longest term studies ever done to assess the long term outcome of babies conceived through IVF, researchers interviewed 656 mothers who used IVF and their 547 adult offspring aged between 18 and 29 years, and compared this to reports from 868 mothers and their 549 adult offspring who were conceived without IVF Specifically, the study found no evidence suggesting increased rates of ADHD in children conceived through IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART). To follow up, the researchers will continue to monitor the participants of the study to seek more support of the already strong evidence in the favor of the safety of IVF.
