Too Much Cardio Throws the Workout Scale off Balance

Los Angeles, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/13/2014 --Cardiovascular activity is an essential component of a good fitness program. We can get this type of activity from walking, running, fitness classes, cycling, or even outdoor yard work. But too much of a good thing is never beneficial, and overtime indulgence in cardio only reduces muscle tissue at rapid rates.

If trying to build up muscles, too much cardio coupled with not enough calorie intake can rapidly decrease type II muscle tissue. This is the muscle tissue that grows when we lift weights, but incorporating a cardio only workout actually reduces the growth of these tissues, and can reduce the growth of muscle tissue in the heart.

Cardiovascular activity has many purposes: working the heart muscles, improving breathing function, and burning calories - whether stored in fat or consumed on a daily basis. If the body burns more calories than it takes in, it sheds excess fat. But, if the body burns beyond available resources the body begins to look for other sources of energy. This can be fat, but if fat is sparse, the body looks for muscle to burn for energy.

Additional benefits of incorporating more than just cardio include an increase in muscle mass. Muscle mass burns more calories when resting than fat does; therefore, the more lean muscle mass we accumulate in the body the more calories we burn overall during rest and during cardiovascular activity.

A good weight loss program should focus on building lean muscle to achieve a toned appearance and improve all over strength for daily function, aerobic activity to burn excess fat and improve the cardiovascular system, and flexibility training to keep muscles long and supple. When reviewing a workout program, make sure that the scale is balanced between all three and ensure that the body gets plenty of rest in between both cardio and weight training sessions.
