Lorton Landfill Expansion Could Include a Green Energy Triangle

If Fairfax County passes EnviroSolutions, Inc.’s proposed expansion of the Lorton Landfill, the county could see the addition of a “Green Energy Triangle” with wind turbines, solar panels, and geothermal piping.

Manassas, VA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/13/2014 --‘Green energy’ is becoming more and more popular by the day, and Northern Virginia based EnviroSolutions, Inc. is encouraging its growth by proposing construction of a Green Energy Park in addition to the proposed expansion of the Lorton Landfill. This project will allow the company to promote more environmentally friendly waste practices for the region.

Located in Fairfax County, Lorton Landfill is a construction and demolition landfill serving the Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C. areas. It also provides recycling services and LEED reporting for participating customers. EnviroSolutions, Inc. has become a leader in the field of LEED thanks to the company’s commitment to providing eco-friendly waste services. For instance, EnviroSolutions, Inc. provides LEED services to both existing buildings and construction sites that are in need of “green” waste management systems as well as LEED recording and documentation.

The current proposal seeks to extend the landfill’s operations to 2040, do away with the mixed waste reclamation use on the property across from the landfill, and supply the community with more than $18 million for local needs. That includes $3.2 million to the Park Authority for new athletic and recreation fields. EnviroSolutions, Inc.’s total community investment would be in excess of $32 million.

The proposed Green Energy Triangle would have a three acre solar energy farm and three wind turbines in the initial phases. Future expansions would allow for up to 12 wind turbines and/or a 40 acre solar energy farm. The plans include the potential for five different phases of construction. Experts believe a state-of-the-art renewable energy park could reduce greenhouse emissions by 3.6 million tons over the life of the park.

The County Zoning staff has completed the initial review of the park application and has recommended approval. In addition, a petition in support of EnviroSolutions, Inc.’s Green Energy Park proposal has been established on Change.org.
