Boston, MA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 03/17/2014 --Qatar has one of the fastest growing and most well funded water sectors in the region with significant government funds being ploughed into water supply and sanitation. We expect these trends to continue due to steady economic growth, rising construction investments and the ongoing stimulation of the projected influx of sporting fans in a few years.

Qatari economic activity will continue to expand at a strong pace during 2014, driven primarily by growth in the non-oil sector. Robust private consumption on the back of a fast-rising population, large government spending commitments, and continued progress on infrastructure projects by public enterprises will support growth over the coming quarters. We have raised our real GDP projections on the back of positive hard data and now forecast growth of 5.4% in 2014, from an estimated 5.7% in 2013 (from 4.8% and 5.0% previously). This will stimulate investment in water infrastructure - a key sector for development, not only to cater to the growing population and rising industrial demand, but also to provide resources for the influx of sports fans in future.

Qatar has one of the highest per capita electricity and water consumption levels in the world, and the energy infrastructure is being increasingly strained as construction and industrial activity picks up in the run-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar's government plans to make investments worth US$22bn in its power and water utilities infrastructure to 2020, according to the Qatar Electricity & Water Company (Kahramaa). Qatar budgeted for US$4.1bn to be spent up to 2015 on electricity and water projects, with a raft of new projects to boost its water reserves. With a combined total value of QR3.2bn, these projects aimed to increase the country's water reserves by as much as 126%.

Qatar also aims to follow in the footsteps of its neighbour UAE and use solar power to fuel desalination plants. We believe this costly undertaking will enable the country to improve the availability of water, particularly for industrial and agricultural consumption, freeing up fresh water resources for domestic use, and enabling them to be less over-used (and therefore regenerate naturally each year).
