VitaBreeze Warns Consumers to Do Their Research when Buying Dietary Supplements

Portland, OR -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/07/2014 --Millions of people take dietary supplements each day to ease a variety of different conditions. While most supplements are manufactured from the best ingredients and with consumer safety in mind, VitaBreeze spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan, cautioned that all supplements are not created equal.

“The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate dietary supplements and consumers don’t always get what they pay for,” said O’Sullivan. “No one should introduce something into their body unless they’ve consulted with their physician. Some supplements may interact badly with prescription medications.”

The sheer number of choices in dietary supplements can be overwhelming and the term “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean that it's safe. People can respond very differently to the same set of ingredients and some companies include binders, fillers and preservatives in their products.

Some supplements may not be appropriate for individuals with allergies or specific dietary requirements, pregnant women or nursing mothers, seniors, and individuals with certain diseases. Overall, dietary supplements are considered safe, but O’Sullivan noted that individuals should exercise due diligence when contemplating a dietary supplement.

“People who want relief for joint pain, for example, should look for a product that contains glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and turmeric,” said O’Sullivan. “Those ingredients are recommended by rheumatologists for joint pain..”

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) states that dietary supplements can be safe provided that consumers follow some basic rules:

- Consult a physician before taking a supplement and tell the doctor about any supplements being taken;
- Read and follow label instructions;
- Purchase supplements from a reputable source;
- Buy from a company that follows best manufacturing practices.

Dietary supplements offer consumers an alternative to costly prescription medications to potentially relieve pain and promote joint health, thereby improving range of movement. The NCCAM cautions consumers about joint pain supplements labeled as herbal, as they can contain dozens of compounds and a full list of ingredients may be lacking on the label.

A joint pain relief formula containing the four ingredients of glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and turmeric offers an effective dietary supplement that many people use for relieving the inflammation that causes pain. Those same ingredients comprise the building blocks the human body needs to maintain soft tissues that surround joints, and are thought to help those with arthritis to move more freely.
