Competitive Landscape

Multinationals dominate sales in oral care. Colgate-Palmolive led value share with 66% in 2013 thanks to a wide presence in toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwashes and dental floss. Despite the adverse regulatory context, the firm introduced the new toothpaste Luminous White under its umbrella brand Colgate in 2013. This is a whitening variety presented in an attractive red package. It promises a whiter smile in just a week and therefore relies on a beauty benefit to attract consumers.

Industry Prospects

Toothpaste and toothbrushes are mature categories with already high penetration amongst Venezuelan households. Educational programmes could lead to increased frequency of toothbrush replacement but hygiene patterns are not likely to change in the medium term under a context of economic difficulties and poor product development. Most of the growth will then come from less developed categories such as mouthwashes/dental rinses and dental floss.
