Silkeborg, Denmark -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/15/2014 --Sleep and proper rest is very essential for us to attain our maximum potential. However, their importance is under recognized as a public health problem. According to a survey done in 2008 in the US, approximately 29% of adults reported sleeping less than 7 hours daily and 70 million have chronic sleep and wakefulness disorder. Adults tend to forget that we too need to sleep at least 8 hours a day.

One of the things which impacts adult’s sleeping and waking life would be the materials we use when we are sleeping. For instance, we must consider the quality of the mattresses and the pillows we use to sleep. In fact, according to the 2008 Better Sleep Month (BSM) National Survey which was sponsored by the Better Sleep Council, respondents who get 7 to 8 hours of sleep everyday are among those who sleep on newer mattresses. The survey also revealed that those respondents who sleep on newer mattresses are the ones who participate on strenuous physical activities on their waking hours compared to those who sleep on old mattresses.

There are a lot of factors though to be considered in determining whether a mattress is opt for replacement. Although mattress manufacturers conclude that a mattress should last 7 to 15 years, one must still consider the weight of the person who is using the mattress and the number of years the mattress have been used. These factors should be considered to make sure that the mattress is still able to function properly based on its support and materials.

Sleep and proper rest also contributes to a lot of health factors which are very important to kids and adults alike. The Harvard Woman’s Health Watch suggested six reasons why we need to get enough sleep. 1 – Sleep helps the brain to retain new information to memory through a process called memory consolidation. Thus, on studies, people who sleep after learning a task tend to pass a test about that particular task later. 2 – Sleep affects our weight and metabolism. People who lack sleep tend to store carbohydrates. Thus altering the body’s hormonal levels which affects our appetite. 3 – Lack of sleep also contributes to greater chances to participate in accidents, medical errors, mishaps and falls. 4 – Lack of sleep also affects one’s mood. It may result to irritability, mood swings and inability to concentrate. Most people who lack sleep also tend to deviate from the things they love doing because of too much tiredness. 5 – Serious sleeping disorders result to hypertension, irregular heartbeat and increase in stress hormone level. 6 – Sleep deprivation may also affect the body’s immune system, including the activities of the body’s killer cells. Studies have shown that sleeping regularly at recommended length may help fight cancer.

Thus it is really important to consider the environment and the materials we use, such as puder, whenever we sleep. Let us consider the factors which affects the length of time we spend in sleeping and make sure that our mattress and pillows are at its best.
