Newport, UK -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/25/2014 --The new changes to the Florida data breach law has now been effective since July 1, 2014. The Florida Information Protection Act of 2014 essentially repeals Florida’s existing data breach notification law and replaces it with one of the nation’s most extensive laws relating to data security and notification.

The following include an insight to the main changes that have been made:

- Expanded definition of personal information – “Personal Information” now includes a user name or email in combination with a password or security question and answer that would permit access to an online account.

- Notice of a data breach must be provided within a 30 day time frame.

- If a data breach affects more than 500 Florida residents notice of this must be provided to the Attorney General notice

- Notice to Florida Attorney general required, including when no risk of harm

- Requires production of forensic reports and other documentation to Attorney General

The changes have been made to the act due to the excessive increase of data breaches and in hope that the new amendments will slow the flood of these data breaches.

Advocates said “Faster reporting times, an expanded collection of relevant data, and increased law enforcement involvement will encourage organisations to be more proactive and give law enforcement more opportunities to catch cybercriminals”.
