San Francisco, CA -- (ReleaseWire) -- 07/24/2014 --BestIDTheftCompanys.com (BIDTC) surveyed more than 1,000 random people and found that more than half of them are currently protecting their identity in some way. Protection methods in the survey included:

- Checking bank statements
- Monitoring credit reports
- Signing up with an identity theft protection company
- Using a credit freeze

In the survey, it also showed that 45 percent of those surveyors don’t do anything to protect their identity. The BIDTC Research Team’s hypothesis for this survey was that the “Nothing” response would far outweigh all of the other responses combined.

“The ’Nothing’ response seems to be the most important take-away from this survey, but we combined all proactive responses (response letters B, C, D and E) and found that a little more than half are actually taking some steps toward protecting their identity on their own,” said website manager Amber Newby.

Newby said that their team values protection through an identity theft protection company the most reliable, but they commend anyone who takes the do it yourself approach (responses B, C and E).

Survey insights include information from two types of demographics: age and income.

The BIDTC Research Team found that one specific age group had a majority response to each one of the proactive responses. For example, people who are 65 years old and older was the majority age group that responded to “I check my bank statements.” The 35 to 44-year-old age group was the majority responder to “I monitor my own credit report.”

Other interesting information the Research Team found related to income was that in almost every single proactive response (ones where people are actually doing something about their identity), the majority income average were easily those who make more than $75,000 a year. A couple of responses showed that the respondents were bringing in more than $150,000 a year.
