Local Attorney Featured on Investigation Discovery Series

Deborah Barbier took part in an Investigation Discovery channel series “Evil Twins: Green-Eyed Monster” aired in April this year. She is a well-respected attorney, practicing in South Carolina.

One of the sisters (Darlene Wooten ) committed suicide and the other (Charlene Corley) was found guilty of federal crimes. Charlene was sentenced to 6.5 years in federal prison.

The twin sisters, over the course of more than nine years, defrauded the Department of Defense of $20.5 million in false shipping invoices. Their firm, C & D Distributors, added hundreds of thousands of dollars to costs of shipping parts to key military installations during hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

She continues, “When Darlene was visited by federal investigators, she borrowed a gun from her son and committed suicide. Charlene was tried and convicted in federal court in the case. She agreed to work with federal investigators to help recover the $15 million amount she was ordered to pay. There were vacation homes, jewelry and automobiles which were seized as part of the restitution.”

The judge agreed that the activities of the sisters were crimes against the people of the United States. Most of the items shipped were considered priority needs to war zones and did not fall under normal auditing and procedural guidelines.

Deborah Barbier was the lead prosecutor in the high profile case. She is now in private practice, working mostly as a criminal defense lawyer.
