The population living in the country, albeit potentially temporarily, increased by an estimated half a million (a high figure given that the population reached 11 million during the year); this population surge was due to the 2011 Libyan refugee exodus, which initially accounted for around one million Libyans fleeing their country, though their presence is deemed 'unofficial'. As Libyans are coffee drinkers and often purchase products at retail in bulk, their growing presence in Tunisia had a positive impact on coffee consumption.
Societe Cafe Bondin is the leading company in the coffee category; it posted a 36% off-trade value share in 2013. The company purchases its raw coffee from Office du Commerce de la Tunisie (OCT), and then processes and packages the coffee. The leading share reflects the fact that consumers have known the company for a long time (it being present since the 1960s) and the Bondin brand is very well known and popular amongst Tunisians; it leads in fresh coffee and is ranked second in instant coffee.
