Bangalore, Karnataka -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/16/2012 -- Narayana Hrudayalaya has carried out its first liver transplant, with a related donor, successfully on 21-month-old Rohit Pillai who was brought all the way from Pune and had a serious liver disorder. Paediatric surgeon Ashley D'Cruz said the disorder, which occurs in infancy, can result in liver failure and the child rarely lives beyond two years.

In the case of Rohit, another surgery was done in Pune but that did not help. It was at that stage that the child's father, an industrial worker, came to know about the facilities available in Bangalore. At the Asha Dinesh Organ Transplant Institute at Narayana Hrudayalaya, the doctors and surgeons and doctors worked fast to save the baby's life.

Rohit got a new lease of life from his mother Prashathi Pillai who gave 25 per cent of her liver to her baby, for transplantation. Medically, it is possible to remove 75 per cent of the liver from a human body as the organ is capable of growing back to its original size in time. A month after the transplant, Rohit is happily playing with toys, his health is back to normal and so is his mother's. The Transplant Institute has been set up with funding from K. Dinesh, a founder-director of Infosys and his wife Asha, who contributed Rs. 4 crores. The facility will soon have five operating rooms dedicated to transplantation of vital organs.
