Uttarakhand’s Chief Minister, Mr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and his wife were amongst the first ones to have visited the Kedarnath temple as the chief priest threw open its doors at 7 AM in the morning after the ‘Dwar Pujan’ ritual. Scores of pilgrims had gathered at the Kedarnath temple for the ‘Mandir Parikarma’ and to get a view of the auspicious Shiva Lingam.

Coinciding with the auspicious day of "Akshya Tritiya", the Chardham yatra comprising pilgrimage to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri was kicked off on Sunday the 16th of May. The portals of both Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines were also reopened to pilgrims with the chanting of hymns & shlokas by the priests of these temples.

Expressing his happiness at the arrival of a huge number of devotees to witness the opening ceremony at Kedarnath, Mr. Nishank said “We invite all to come and seek the blessings of the lord at Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Pilgrims should also try to visit other auspicious destinations like Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar and Kalpeshwar that form the ‘Panch Kedar' along with Kedarnath. Our government has made special arrangements for the safety and security of all the pilgrims.”

The present temple at Badrinath was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the eighth century A.D. This temple stands adjacent to the site where the Pandavas are believed to have built a Shiva temple.
