Bernadette and Winston Charles to Entertain at Annual Festival of Lights Concert

Kensington, MD -- (SBWIRE) -- 12/22/2014 -- For more than 17 years, Bernadette and Winston Charles have been entertaining audiences with their voices and providing a powerful witness through prison ministries and other musical events.  Now, the couple will be featured at the Annual Festival of Lights at the Washington, DC, Mormon Temple on January 1, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.  The Temple is located at 9900 Stoneybrook Drive in Kensington, Maryland.

This Prince George's couple has spent many years ministering through song in a variety of venues.  The have dedicated their spare time to offering encouragement through their church's prison ministry and performing gospel music for inmates in Jesup, Cumberland and Washington, D.C.  "It makes us feel we are doing something worthwhile for the community, and for people who are locked up," Bernadette Charles said. "They can't come to church, so we are reaching them where they are."  "It's been a long time singing together, and we're still singing," said Winston Charles.

The couple began their involvement in the prison ministry through their church as long ago as 1997.  They sing classical and contemporary songs.  They were honored recently for their involvement in prison ministry work by the Seventh Day Adventist Allegheny East Conference Prison Ministries Federation at an awards ceremony held on September 14, 2014.  In speaking of Bernadette and Winston Charles, Prison Ministries Federation Vice President Gloria Smith said that attendance at the prison musical events has increased due to the couple's signing and that "a lot of the inmates are there for various reasons, but hearing the Charles' sing lifts their spirits, moves them and, at least for a time, lifts their eyes towards Jesus."  They are known in the prisons in which they work as "The Singing Couple."

The couple is originally from Trinidad and Tobago and met in New York.  They studied for several years at the Ottley Music Studio in Hyattsville before moving Upper Marlboro in 2007.  According to Winston Charles, the couple continues to perform to bring joy to others.  "The benefits are not physical, not tangible," he said. "It's more spiritual. It's a feeling, good feeling that you are going out and doing what you're supposed to be doing as a missionary, because we are missionaries."
