Designer Chess Game Revolutionizes the Way History Is Taught

Teaching Black History Month & Civil Rights Movement to the Youths of Today

Columbus, OH -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/02/2015 -- Great Faces of America is a designer chess set that will feature civil rights activists Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. The game teaches children about black history and the work these two great men did to push equal rights among all races. Now they have launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding to get this unique designed chess set manufactured and ready to be sold.

Lonnie E. Thomas, creator of Great Faces of America, found out from his grandchildren that public schools do not include black history month in their curriculum. He was alive during the Civil Rights Movement and knew there needed to be another way to teach the children of today about this important part of America's history. He created a solution that will not only teach children about history, but also help develop their minds. The solution is the chess game Great Faces of America.

"A man who does not know his history is bound to repeat the mistakes of the past," says Lonnie Thomas. With the growing issue of racial discrimination in the world today, such as the Ferguson case or the gridlock in Washington, it is important children learn the history of civil rights so they do not repeat the struggles again.

The game incorporates historic African-American figures, Martin L. King and Malcolm X into the popular game of chess, which will challenge a child's mind and grow their analytical and strategic thinking skills. It shows children and adults how to use their minds to defeat the enemy without resorting to violence. Each game board will come with a booklet that has a bio of each man and 32 important facts about their life. Also, a bit of history on each chess piece within the game.

About Great Faces of America
Pieces on the board represent significant moments and people in both King and Malcolm's life, such as their spouses and important moments like Mr. King's March on Washington. The board is 19 x 19 inches and comes in a traveling case with leather handles. This durable case has engraved figure slots for each piece and weighs about 8 ½ pounds with folded sides 4 ½ inches wide. King chess pieces are of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, which are both 3 ½ inches in length. The game has already been trademarked and patented so it is ready to be manufactured and distributed.

For the Kickstarter campaign, they are asking backers for support to raise $100,000. The funds will go towards manufacturing the game and shipping cost, which they will be able to ship to anywhere in the world. Dr. King and Malcolm X Intellectual Property received a sample of the chess game and gave positive feedback. With enough supporters, this will show to them there is an interest in having this in the market to teach children about black history month and accelerate the process to get the game accepted.

All backers who contribute will get a chance to vote on the color selection of the box and booklet. Supporters who give $10 or more will be rewarded a booklet. Anyone who contributes $100 or more, they will receive a chess game.
