Aussie Couple's Amazon Ayahuasca Adventure

Perth (Western Australia) based professional couple Julian and Angela leave comfortable jobs with mining and engineering giants to follow a calling in to the Amazon jungle of Peru

Iquitos, Loreto -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/08/2015 -- In a brave bid to follow their calling, Perth couple Julian and Angela are now calling the Amazon Jungle of Peru home after leaving their comfortable jobs with mining and engineering jobs behind. Having ventured in to the world of shamanic healing via the ancient psychedelic plant medicine 'ayahuasca', they returned to rescue the centre where they had their life-changing experiences previously.

After the unexpected death of the previous owner of Refugio Altiplano Healing Center, Julian and Angela felt an obligation to return to inject some new energy in to the business, which had been in operation for over 17 years. "We returned to Perth after our experiences as radically changed people," explains the duo. " We felt so fortunate to have had the gift of transformation that we couldn't bear to think of 'The Refugio', which sits on 1200 acres of virgin forest, being shut down and denying others the same opportunity."

Julian and Angela now live full time at the centre, which runs shamanic ceremonies 5 times per week. They ensure their guests feel safe and supported in a beautiful natural environment conducive to radical transformation. While Peru is a long way from home, they encourage Australian's to take control of their lives and make the journey for themselves. "Our guests often include people who want to break their reliance on pharmaceutical drugs. They are sick of dealing with the symptoms, and want to address the root-cause of their problem," says Angela, explaining the benefits of the controversial 'ayahuusca' concoction used as part of the offered treatment which is made by brewing two Amazonian plants in water on high heat for many hours. It is administered by a shaman at night in a ceremonial setting, which includes the singing of specific healing songs known as icaros.

According to Julian, ayahuasca shamanism refers to the use of ayahuasca to attain a modified state of consciousness, during which participants are able to process trauma and repressed memories. "The brew is currently being rediscovered by Western medicine, with extensive anecdotal evidence suggesting its application to conditions such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, alcoholism and addiction, physical illness and mental and emotional problems," he explains.

It was originally Julian's background in Anthropology that first interested him in medicinal plants, but this was compounded when he experienced significant relief from depression, bi-polar disorder and alcoholism through the pursuit of natural remedies.
