Indianapolis, IN -- (SBWIRE) -- 01/28/2015 -- Cross docking is a process which moves incoming products directly from receiving to shipping, eliminating additional product touches to put-away and later pick the product for orders. This means that the incoming products are either being shipped out in full case quantities or have been packaged with the exact right combination of items that can immediately ship out to fill an order.
Incoming cases may be placed onto a conveyor, pass an inline print and apply machine to receive a carrier shipping label and then get routed to a specific shipping lane destination. In other instances an operator may use an RF device to scan the incoming product, print out a label and use a fork truck to move the product to the correct shipping dock.
Use of cross docking is common in the retail industry where companies can work with suppliers to package items in combinations that can go direct to stores. An example would be apparel where a retailer may request that a supplier place an assortment of sizes (S, M, L, XL) of a color of shirt into a box. By having the assortment of sizes of a single color shirt within a box, the retailer can allocate the number of boxes needed for each store to push new merchandise out quickly making sure all stores receive a selection of sizes.
