Montrose, Angus -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/25/2015 -- This year's Car of the Year awards have been announced, and the Volkswagen Passat was a clear winner, getting more than 90 points than the second-place Citroen C4 Cactus. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class took third place.
There were seven cars in the final shortlist for the awards, narrowed down from 31 original candidates. The winners are decided by a 58-strong judging panel made up of respected European motoring journalists. This year saw the Ford Mondeo take fourth place, the Nissan Qashqai was fifth, the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer was sixth and the Renault Twingo came seventh. The competition is open to new cars that have gone on sale within the last twelve months.
Judges choose winners based upon a number of criteria, including comfort, design, driver satisfaction, economy, functionality, handing, performance, price, safety, technical innovation and value for money.
Volkswagen has dominated the Car of the Year awards over the last few years, with the VW Polo taking the prize in 2010 and the VW Golf named as 2013's winner. In traditional style, the winners were announced ahead of the opening of the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. Votes are added up to find one overall winner rather than allotted to different categories.
Many of the awards went to newer versions of existing cars, including the Passat, the Mondeo, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Nissan Qashqai.
