DimensionU Announces Winners in South Carolina Math Competition

Berkeley County and Dorchester School District Two schools take top place in the 5th annual event held at SPAWAR Systems Atlantic in North Charleston.

 

Richmond, VA -- (SBWIRE) -- 03/30/2015 -- DimensionU is pleased to announce and congratulate the winning teams from the 5th Annual DIMENSIONU / SPAWAR Mathematics Video Game Competition held Friday, March 13 in Charleston, South Carolina. Eight school teams from the Charleston area came together to represent their respective schools from the Tri-County area. The annual tournament, hosted at SPAWAR Systems Atlantic facility on the U.S. Naval base in North Charleston, is part of SPAWAR's STEM Outreach efforts with area schools and school districts. The competition utilized the DimensionU Games platform, which integrates multiplayer, first-person action-adventure gaming with mathematics curriculum. Access to the DimensionU program is available to both schools and individual consumers.

Each school brought three teams (A, B, C) and each of those teams played other teams in a round-robin tournament. The preliminary rounds were comprised of multiple team rounds of DimensionU's Meltdown game. The top eight teams advanced to the Semi-Finals, where they played two rounds of DimensionU's TowerStorm game. The final top four teams battled it out in DimensionU's Velocity game to determine the top three overall winning teams.

First place was Hanahan Middle School - Team C (8th Grade), from Berkeley County Public Schools. Each team member was awarded an Android tablet along with a trophy. Second and third place winners were Dubose Middle School – Team A (7th Grade), and Dubose Middle School – Team B (7th Grade), respectively, from Dorchester School District Two. In addition to trophies, the 2nd place team received iPod nanos, and the third place team won Visa gift cards. All participants received medals and participation certificates.

The three winning teams also advance to DimensionU's Department of Defense Virtual Math Games Competition where they will go up against teams from six states, representing various branches of the military and respective research labs that have also sponsored similar STEM Outreach activities. South Carolina's team will represent the Navy and SPAWAR Systems Atlantic on May 19th in this live, multi-state competition. Additional teams will compete from New York (Air Force), Illinois (Army), Orlando (Navy), Illinois (Army) and New Jersey (Army).

Other participating schools at the March 13th event included Alston Middle School, Cane Bay Middle School, Gregg Middle School, Oakbrook Middle School, River Oaks Middle School, and Rollings Middle School of the Arts.
